Worth Mentioning-Your doctor, this site and articles you read may use the words hemihypertrophy and hemihyperplasia interchangeably. When you do your research, you may want to search using both words. The technical difference between the two terms is as follows:

  • Hemihypertrophy- is overgrowth caused by increased individual cell size.
  • Hemihyperplasia- is overgrowth caused by an increase in the number of individual cells.

Which type caused the overgrowth is rarely determined, so hemihypertrophy is usually the term used.
